Senior Employment: Michael's Story.

Michael, aged 63, was beginning his second year of retirement when he came to see me.
“I’m bored Greg”, he began. “Maybe I should have stayed to 65, or wound down more gradually. Things are a bit tense at home - I now know all
about the retired spouse syndrome! I miss the social aspect of work".
"I have an excellent pension and my health is good, thank god, and yet I’m disappointed with my retirement. I was so looking forward to doing “things”
I always wanted to do, but it’s not working out that way. I need a job to stay physically and mentally active! It’s not about money”
“Mind you, I have no desire to return to my former role, I’ve done my time in corporate life. I thought about starting my own business, but
I’m reluctant to take the financial risk at this stage. Part time work, maybe self-employed, would suit best and it must be a “feel good” retirement job.
My second career will not be about money, status or “success”. Maybe it sounds a bit pious, but it would be nice to leave a legacy, to make a difference.”
I reminded him that he had already left a legacy and made a difference. “That’s a given, take a bow Michael! Sometimes we forget, or take for
granted, what we have achieved”
Once again I rely on the Bard of Avon to make my point...

certain advantages. You have an extensive network of contacts, who will vouch for you. You have a wealth of experience and transferable skills. You have a track record and
you know your strengths and weaknesses.
You have the 3M’s- Mental, Motivation, Mature. You won’t need much training - you can learn new skills because you have the right attitude and motivation.
You are flexible as regards full time/part time, project or temporary work. You are in the fortunate situation that income is not a priority.”
